In an attempt to scare off two prowlers, an 18-year-old man fired two gunshots in the air and then accidentally shot his right foot.

The young man, who was watching his grandfather's 125 pigs in Magna, said he was asleep Thursday and awoke to the sound of a dog barking, according to a report from the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office. As he looked out of a window, he heard voices and saw two large figures outside by a shed and suspected they were thieves wanting to steal the livestock.

When he spotted the trespassers, he grabbed a revolver and went outside to investigate. He was not wearing shoes.

Outside, he fired two shots in the air, and as he cocked the revolver again, he decided not to fire a third time. However, as he was bringing it back down to his side, his finger jarred the trigger and he felt a "sudden sting" on his right foot.

As the two prowlers ran off the property, the boy went inside the house and saw "a lot of blood coming from his foot and noticed a hole through his right foot near the rear of the middle toe," the report says. The bullet had traveled through the foot.

He was treated at Pioneer Valley Hospital and released the same day.
