Altogether, the horses that participated in the annual Hell's Kitchen 50-mile endurance ride covered more mileage than a round trip from Manti to Los Angeles, a trail master estimated.

"It was like the Pony Express," he added, "except that the riders didn't have to dodge arrows." The ride covered some of Sanpete County's roughest country, he said. The youngest rider was 8-year-old Allison Ural, Park City, and the oldest 71-year-old Will Tanner, Pleasant Grove.

Jake Christensen, Mt. Pleasant, Sanpete County, placed first in the junior division. Ronald Bracken, Washington, Washington County, took first overall and also first in the heavyweight division.

Ann Parr, Draper, placed first in the middleweight division and also received the Kent Thursby Memorial Best-condition award, named for Kent Thursby, Ephraim, who was killed in a riding accident a year ago.

Mary Ann Severin, Gunnison, Colo., came in first in the lightweight division.

The winners received items like bits, halters and blankets.
