A midtown Manhattan messenger has been charged as the attacker who blew needle darts at well-dressed women.

Deputy Chief Joseph DeMartino identified the suspect Thursday as Jerome Wright, 33, of the Bronx, who was first questioned by police Tuesday and went the next day to the Midtown South Precinct, where three women identified him in a lineup.Wright was charged with three counts each of reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a weapon and harassment, DeMartino said at a news conference.

Five other women who viewed the lineup did not identify him, and the rest of the 53 dart attacks remained under investigation, a police spokesman said.

Meanwhile, the elusive Zodiac killer confounded a massive police effort to snare him, but investigators said they were no less determined to find the gunman.

Police officials said the stepped-up uniform and plainclothes patrols blanketing the city was one of the largest operations of its kind. But the gunman never attacked, and the dragnet caught only some look-alikes.
