To the editor:
Thanks and appreciation to the Salt Lake City Fire Department for their expert and quick action that saved several homes from damage during a fast-moving grass fire on July 4.The fire was apparently started by transients near Victory Road. The wind picked up flames with frightening speed and drove them up the hill to Ensign Downs. In just minutes, some 200 acres had burned. No homes were burned; but yards, fences, shrubs and trees did not fare so well. Fortunately, no person was caught in the path of the fast-moving flames.
The smoke attracted neighbors, who quickly put garden hoses to work soaking yards and buildings. They protected homes of other neighbors who were away. This good work is greatly appreciated.
