The son of a West Valley City police officer is in critical condition after he accidentally shot himself with his father's gun Saturday.

Danny Stewart, 3, 735 Bryan Ave., was playing with his 6-year-old brother Steven about 2 p.m., when they came upon their father's handcuffs and a loaded .20 gauge shotgun. Danny picked up the gun and began fiddling with it when he accidentally shot himself in the neck, said Salt Lake Police Lt. Steve Diamond. Danny was taken to Primary Children's Medical Center where he was in critical but stable condition.The brothers were being cared for by a 10-year-old babysitter who was in the house at the time of the shooting.
