Explosions rocked a hotel and private home in the Johannesburg area early Saturday, killing one man, seriously damaging the buildings and bearing the hallmarks of right-wing terrorism, police said.

The bombings ended a weeklong lull in urban terrorism blamed by authorities on white extremists opposed to racial reform. The first blast, soon after midnight, ripped through the Willie Smith Hotel - a gathering place for "a lot of liberal students" from city universities. Hours later, the second blast, which caused no casualties, hit the suburban home of a right-wing activist recently released from detention following a probe into white terrorist groups.
