In the West Coast's curious crime response to New York City's blowgun-toting Dartman, Los Angeles has the Manhole Man.

Less violent but no less offbeat than the Manhattan dart blower, an unknown culprit has stolen 150 manhole covers in the last week, officials said Saturday.Manhole Man has created gaping traffic hazards around town and it will cost $14,598 to replace the heisted hole covers, said Delwin Biagi, city Bureau of Sanitation director.

The motive for stealing the 100-pound hunks of metal is known only to Manhole Man, he said.

New York's so-called Dartman stalked well-dressed women in midtown Manhattan this summer, targeting their backsides with his homemade barb-pointed needle darts.

Police made an arrest in the case after 52 attacks. The victims were not seriously injured.
