When your shadow is shorter than you are, the sun is high and especially damaging to the skin.Skin specialists like the rule, developed by Leith Holloway, a Rockville, Md., meteorologist and astronomer, better than guidelines related to the clock, such as avoiding sun between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Sun strength varies by time zone, latitude and season. The shadow test, by contrast, works anywhere and any time, and children find it easy to follow.
