President Carlos Menem has accepted the credentials of the first British ambassador to Argentina since the two countries went to war over the Falklands in 1982.

The war "is an issue of the past," the new ambassador, Humphrey Maud, told reporters covering the ceremony Wednesday at the president's official residence in the suburban town of Olivos. "Now we can think of the future."Ownership of the Falklands "is not an issue for discussion at this moment," said the 56-year-old career diplomat.
