The seeds for a memorial honoring the 21 victims of the 1984 San Ysidro massacre were planted Wednesday at a groundbreaking ceremony on the sixth anniversary of the tragedy.

More than 100 people, including survivors of some of the victims, stood by quietly while city officials and community leaders turned the first spades of dirt at the site of the nation's worst single-day mass shooting.Twenty-one granite hexagonal pillars, varying in height from one to six feet, will mark the spot where an unemployed drifter armed with three guns brought grief and notoriety to the tiny border town.
