A 300-member children's chorus will blend their voices with movie and recording star Pat Boone as the SCERA Shell hosts the first annual "Celebration of Families" Tuesday, July 24, at 8 p.m., 699 S. State.

Boone, who still holds the all-time record for being on the musical charts for more than 200 consecutive weeks, will croon some of his favorite hits of the past four decades, including "April Love," "Love Letters in the Sand," his first recording "Two Hearts, Two Kisses," "Ain't That a Shame," "Friendly Persuasion" and more. The 90-minute variety show will be highlighted by a tribute to Naomi Ward Randall, creator and lyricist of the LDS children's song, "I Am a Child of God." The children's chorus, representing nations throughout the world, will join Boone in honoring Randall.

The children's chorus also will provide backup to Boone during a special Disney medley and several patriotic renditions.

The Celebration of Families has been billed as an evening to pay tribute to "Utah's pioneer heritage and the families of today," said manager Stewart H. Beveridge. He said Boone is the natural choice to headline the show because he is known for his dedication to the family, as well as for his extensive entertainment career.

"To me, the real riches in this world are my family," Boone said during a telephone interview. "The main focus of my life is the responsibilities and blessings that come from marriage and family. My career has taken a back seat many times to family and home concerns."

Boone, who has four daughters and 14 grandchildren, will perform a song he wrote titled, "Are There Any More Squares," which epitomizes his philosophy about life.

"I love to sing that song," he said. "I love to give a sense of pride to people who still espouse traditional values, like family, church, patriotism and wholesomeness."

Referring to Ward's inspirational song, Boone said, "The message of the song is great." He said the main thing about the song to him is that "I am a living human being created by God, and I'm important to him."

Others performing during the evening will include the comedy team "Mike and Me," which will open the show. The team features the talents of Michael Clapier and Gary Neilson. "The duo will mix a little music with a lot of comedy," Beveridge said.

Also featured will be the Ed and Dahlia Cabera family from the Bay Area in California. The finale of the evening will be a large fireworks display.
