Nine people were arrested Thursday night after vice officers raided a high-stakes poker game at a Salt Lake home.

In addition to chips, cards, tables and other gambling paraphernalia, $14,000 cash was confiscated by officers at a residence at 1774 S. 300 East, said Salt Lake County Sheriff's Capt. Joe Gee.The suspects were apparently playing Omaha poker - a fast-paced version of poker with high stakes. "You can lose $500 or even $1,000 pretty fast in that game," Gee said.

Deputies have been watching the home for about two months and said people would gather there two or three nights every week. Of the 11 people in the home when the raid occurred, eight men and one woman were arrested for investigation of misdemeanor gambling and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail. All were immediately released on a no-bail release.

Gee said that in addition to breaking state laws against gambling, the participants are also putting themselves in a dangerous situation. "If there was an armed robber who knew there was $13,000 or $14,000 in the home, that would be a fairly good haul for him," he said.
