More than 3,000 poets from the United States, Canada and 27 other countries will converge when the "World of Poetry," the largest organization of poets in the world, holds its sixth annual international convention next month.

In addition to its membership, Bob Hope, Joan Rivers, William Shatner, Pearl Bailey and Red Buttons will recite their works as well as entertain the attendees at the meeting that runs Aug. 26-28.Soviet poet Natasha Borovsky; Dr. Kenneth Fan, poet laureate of Taiwan; and former U.S. Sen. Eugene McCarthy are expected to attend.

A highlight of the convention will include a "Poets for Peace Balloonathon," in which each poet lofts a poem tied to a balloon into the air.

Over the past 15 years, the Northern California-based "World of Poetry" has provided its members with poetic justice - a chance not only to express oneself, but to be heard.

The organization augments its annual convention by issuing a quarterly newsletter combining practical advice on publishing and poetry news.
