FIRE DAMAGES ROSE PARK HOME

A Salt Lake couple spent the Pioneer Day weekend camping in the Uintas, and while they were gone, their Rose Park home was nearly destroyed in a suspicious fire late Monday night.

The fire, which started at 1346 N. Colorado (1340 West) shortly before midnight, may have been arson, said Battalion Chief Gary Maxfield. Both doors in the home belonging to Mike and Angie Haslan were open when firefighters arrived, he said.John Ritter, the Haslans' next door neighbor, said he called the fire department after he saw flames inside the one-story brick home. After he called, he went outside and trained a garden hose on the roof "to try to keep the damage down," he said.

Though firefighters managed to get the fire under control in about 10 minutes, the house was badly damaged. Maxfield gave a preliminary losses estimate of $30,000 but said he couldn't give an accurate estimate of the value of the home's contents.

No one was injured in the fire.
