A chartered bus carrying members of a girls softball team to a tournament in Oklahoma collided with a flatbed truck loaded with chickens, killing the bus driver and injuring 14 passengers.
David Ponder King, 34, who was driving the bus Tuesday from the Tampa, Fla., area to Oklahoma City was pronouced dead at the scene, police said. The driver's hometown was not immediately known, authorities said.The father of one of the players, 43-year-old Richard Sires of Temple Terrace, Fla., was taken to Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock for surgery on a broken left leg and was in satisfactory condition, spokeswoman Dana Dussing-Berry said Wednesday.
The collision occured about 7 p.m. when the bus turned south on State Highway 9 from an exit ramp and was hit by the northbound truck, officials said. The driver of the truck, Elmer Justice, 52, was not injured, but thousands of chickens ran through the area as the crates they were being shipped in broke apart, police said.
