The parents of an infant girl who starved to death on an herbal diet were sentenced to nearly two years in prison on Tuesday for failing to provide the necessities of life for their daughter.

Khachadour Atikian, 54, and his wife, Sonia, 38, showed little emotion as they were led handcuffed from Ontario Supreme Court after Justice John O'Driscoll imposed the maximum sentence - two years less one day in jail.Their 16-month-old daughter, Lorie, died in September 1987. Her emaciated, jaundiced body had wasted away to 11 pounds.

The couple came to Canada from Lebanon in the mid-1970s and have two healthy teenage children.
