If Desi Arnaz hadn't played around a bit on the side, there might never have been an "I Love Lucy." So says producer Larry Thompson, now making an unauthorized CBS-TV biography of Desi and wife Lucille Ball. Lucy, says Thompson, wanted to keep a close eye on her singing husband, who "was playing more than just bongos with other women in Hollywood."

Explains Thompson: "It was this flaw that he had that led to the birth of one of the most historic TV shows. Desi was born in Cuba, very macho, very sexy. It was one of the aspects of his personality. It was very painful for them."While that part of Lucy and Desi's lives will be in the film, Thompson says the couple's battles with the bottle will not. "It's not that we are going to cover up anything," he says. "The film is going to be done with a sense of balance, which in the end will make you like these people very much."
