A three-mile-long column of 16,000 peasants marched to the governing party headquarters Saturday in Mexico City to back their demands for land reform.

"This is the only way we can open the doors of the agricultural sector agencies and the only way they'll take us into account and provide solutions to our problems," protest leader Cesar del Angel was quoted as saying by the independent Excelsior news service. The marchers arrived at the complex after a six-day trek from the Pacific Coast state of Veracruz.

They said the government promised the land in an Oct. 16 written agreement with their organization, the National Movement of 400 Communities.
