A Colorado youth died Monday evening when the car he was riding in rolled near Hanksville, Wayne County, and a St. George man was killed early Monday when his truck slammed into a cliff in the Virgin River Gorge on I-15 in Arizona.
Raymond Smith, 16, Lakewood, Colo., was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, according to a Utah Highway Patrol report by Trooper Boyd Gledhill.Smith was a passenger in a car driven by Michael Notars, 25, also of Lakewood. They were traveling south on U-226 when, after veering to the right, the vehicle hit a culvert and flipped onto its roof. The accident occurred at about 5:10 p.m.
The driver and two other passengers, Karl Berryman, 19, and Clint Jansson, 19, both of Lakewood, Colo., were treated for injuries at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction, Colo.
Arizona Highway Patrol Trooper Tod Kleinman said the identity of the St. George man was being held pending notification of relatives.
The victim was southbound in a pickup truck when he apparently lost control at high speed, Kleinman said. The truck hit a cement divider, veered off the road and ran into the mountainside.
