A noontime blaze Thursday at an auto auction yard destroyed four vehicles and damaged 10 more, causing an estimated $45,000 to $55,000 in damage, according to South Davis Fire District Chief Brent Argyle.

Argyle said the fire at the Utah Auto Auction yard at 1600 W. 500 South in Woods Cross "just jumped from one vehicle to another" in the tightly packed auction yard.Three 1990 GM cars and a van belonging to the auction company were destroyed, Argyle said, and another 10 cars were damaged.

The fire started in a van equipped with a steam-generating unit used in cleaning and detailing vehicles for resale, according to the chief.

The fire was reported at 12:29 p.m. South Davis firemen were on the scene within four minutes and had the fire knocked down within five minutes of their arrival.

Three SDFD engines responded.
