A Catholic priest visiting from St. Louis for an education conference was shot repeatedly in the head early Friday as he sat in his car in a high-crime area, police said.

Police said they had no suspects or motive for the slaying of the Rev. Mario Robert Ross, 49, the director of campus ministry at St. Louis University, and they were investigating why he was driving in the inner-city neighborhood after midnight.Police spokesman Foster Arnett speculated Ross might have been lost. He said Ross was not wearing his clerical collar or the black pants and black shirt that priests commonly wear, but was instead dressed in white corduroy slacks and a white pullover sport shirt.
