A street-level drug dealer testified Friday Mayor Marion Barry bought crack cocaine directly from her 25 times over a three-month period in 1988, often traveling by limousine to her home to get the drugs.
Lydia Pearson testified that Barry would telephone her to set up the drug buys. She testified that Barry normally would buy three $30 bags of crack while his bodyguards, District of Columbia police officers, remained at his government limousine.Barry bought the drugs "about 25 times" between July and September 1988, said Pearson.
Also Friday, FBI forensic toxicology expert Thomas Lynch testified the cocaine level in Barry's urine Jan. 18, the night he was arrested in an FBI sting operation, was a "tremendous amount" and that the urine also showed traces of recent marijuana use.
Barry was shown smoking crack on an FBI videotape the night of his arrest at the Vista International Hotel. He is on trial on 14 perjury and cocaine charges, and faces up to 26 years in prison and fines of up to $1.85 million if convicted.
