While UFO experts talked to reporters Friday about the serious nature of their weekend symposium, vendors hawked everything from T-shirts festooned with aliens to watches emblazoned with flying saucers.

One vendor offered to take a photo of customers next to a statue of a bug-eyed alien for $5.Others gathered for the 21st annual Mutual UFO Network Symposium sought to sell 14-karat gold charms for $139 and $1 maps of the local sites where UFOs have allegedly been spotted.

More than 700 people from across the United States and abroad are registered to attend the symposium, which begins with lectures Saturday at the Pensacola Civic Center.

Sunday's events include a bus tour of nearby Gulf Breeze.

Investigators say there have been 300 claimed sightings in the area since late 1987. The so-called Gulf Breeze sightings will be discussed Saturday night when Ed and Frances Walters, who wrote a book about the sightings, discuss their experiences.

John L. Spencer, an author and researcher, is scheduled to discuss the different perceptions of UFOs in the United States and abroad.

Author-minister Barry H. Downing of Endwell, N.Y., was expected to discuss theories involving the relationship of flying saucers and religion.
