Norman Mailer was on hand Saturday in Boston to present the $7,500 1990 Ernest Hemingway Foundation Award to Mark Richard at the fourth annual International Hemingway Conference.

Richard was honored for his short story collection, "The Ice at the Bottom of the World," which the judges said exhibited "the quintessentially American balancing act of despair and high spirits" and a writing style that shifted from "the unerring buzz of colloquial cadences into thrilling slipstreams of poetry."The four-day conference will include presentation of papers on gender issues in Hemingway's fiction, discussions of his works and some of Hemingway's home movies.
