LAYTON AWARDS CONTRACT FOR WATER WELL

The Layton City Council recently awarded a contract of just over $193,000 for the drilling of a new water well on the city's west side. The council approved the bid submitted by Layne-Western Co., the sole bidder.

According to Scott Carter, community development director, the bid includes a possible change order increasing it to $216,000. The city engineer estimated the well's cost at $219,000.An exact cost on the project is hard to pin down, Carter said, because no one knows how deep the 20-inch well will be drilled to achieve the 1,500 to 2,800 gallons-per-minute (gpm) flow the city is requiring.

The city engineer hopes the well, which will be drilled near 1600 West Gordon Ave., will hit the water it needs at 600 to 700 feet, Carter said. But a similar flow on another well the city drilled previously wasn't achieved until the well went to almost 900 feet.
