A Salt Lake County man was shot early Monday while trying to stop three men who were apparently trying to steal his neighbor's truck.
Todd H. Wininger, 26, was leaving for work about 2:45 a.m. Monday when he noticed three men who he believes were attempting to steal his neighbor's truck. He chased the suspects, and one of them allegedly fired a shot into the air.According to a sheriff's report, Wininger thought the gun was only a harmless cap gun so he continued to run after the suspects, hoping to chase one down. One of the suspects apparently then shot at Wininger, hitting him in the left leg.
Neighbors called the Salt Lake County sheriff's office after hearing Wininger's cries for help. He was lying in the middle of the road at 865 E. Springview Drive and 3190 South.
Wininger was taken to St. Mark's Hospital where he was treated for a shattered leg bone.
