Donald B. Olsen, director of the University of Utah's Institute for Biomedical Engineering and the Artificial Heart Research Laboratory, has become the first veterinarian named president-elect of the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs.

The society consists of 1,400 scientists from many fields interested in research related to the development, evaluation and clinical application of artificial internal organs. Its members are working on artificial hearts, kidneys, lungs and other devices to replace the functions of diseased or lost organs.Olsen, professor of surgery, bioengineering and pharmaceuticals, was awarded the Utah Governor's Medal for Science and Technology in 1987.
