If nothing else changes in the BYU defense, at least one thing will be different: No Bob Davis to call the defensive signals.
And to inflame everyone around him with his colorful quotes. His replacement as defensive signal-caller will be inside linebacker Rocky Biegel.
Biegel called the signals last season whenever Davis was out of the game, and said he feels comfortable taking on the job.
But Biegel plans to leave the other part of Davis' act to someone else.
"Bob and I are good friends, but I'm a little bit different," Biegel said. "He liked to put on the show and tell the crowd `I'm the man' out there.
"I'm a little more low-key. But I do like to get pumped up out on the field."
In other camp news:
- The only defensive position that is still up for grabs is weakside safety. Junior Josh Arnold is listed No. 1 on the media guide depth chart, but Dick Felt, defensive coordinator, says sophomore Derwin Gray is pushing Arnold.
"Both are doing well and they're both going to be playing," Felt said. "I don't think I know right now who will start the first game."
- Joe Evans is now penciled in as the No. 2 quarterback, but the Cougar staff hasn't decided yet who will be the No. 3 man traveling with the varsity.
Remaining contenders are sophomore Brent Smith, freshmen Ryan Hancock and Brock Spencer, and several walk-ons. Coaches have said one of the freshmen will play with the junior varsity, which effectively leaves two candidates.
A likely scenario would be Smith redshirting this year and a freshman being No. 3, since both freshmen could end up on LDS missions next season.
- The Athletic Department was so pleased with response to its KBYU replays of 12 BYU victories that it's already planning a similar program for next year.
"It succeeded far beyond our expectations," said Jay Monsen, electronic media director. "Judging from the calls and comments we've received, it was one of the best things we've ever done."
