Utah Highway Patrol troopers inspect mangled bicycle ridden by a 17-year-old Salt Lake youth. The youth was hit by a car and critically injured Tuesday afternoon as he rode down I-80 at the mouth of Parleys Canyon. He was westbound in the emergency lane about 2:40 p.m. when his bicycle was hit by a vehicle driven by James T. Richards, 77, Park City, who was traveling about 50 to 55 miles per hour. Although cyclists aren't normally allowed to ride along interstate highways, the section of I-80 where the youth was riding is a legal bicycle route, said Trooper Robert Humphrey. Life Flight took the youth to University Hospital. A hospital spokeswoman asked Wednesday morning that the name of the youth, who suffered massive head and internal injuries, not be published until his father can be contacted.
