Brigham Young University officials have announced the appointments of Douglas M. Chabries as assistant to the academic vice president for computing and Kelly C. McDonald as managing director of Information System Services.

Chabries, who is chairman of the electrical and computer engineering department, fills a new position and will report to Academic Vice President Stan L. Albrecht.McDonald, who is associate executive director of Information System Services, will report to Administrative Vice President Dee F. Andersen. McDonald will replace Willard H. Gardner, who is retiring Aug. 27 after 27 years of service at BYU.

Both appointees will work in collaboration with the newly formed Computer Policy and Planning Council, chaired by BYU Provost Bruce C. Hafen.

Hafen said Chabries and McDonald will work closely together to fulfill an administrative charge to develop a united, cohesive direction and strategy for the future of computing and information systems at BYU.

"Doug Chabries will be responsible for providing the comprehensive plan as well as representing the academic community, while Kelly McDonald will provide input for administrative functions as well as manage the operational needs of Information System Services," Hafen said.

Chabries is a professor of electrical engineering and has been department chairman since 1983.

He joined the faculty in 1978 after heading the Weapons Technology Division for Naval Ocean Systems in San Diego. He also served as head of the electronics branch of the Naval Undersea Center in Pasadena.
