Logan residents will vote in November on whether to hike the sales tax a quarter-cent to fund a citywide bus system.
The Municipal Council agreed Thursday night to put the issue on the ballot. The vote will come two years after the defeat of a Utah Transit Authority proposal for a countywide bus system.
Mary Ann Warren, chairwoman of a mayor-appointed transportation committee, said, "Although the 1988 plan was defeated by the county, residents of Logan gave it strong support."
The sales tax would raise $620,000, which Warren said is enough revenue to offer bus service free of charge.
"At a later date, residents may decide to charge for rides and use some of the money for transportation to Salt Lake City," she said.
Plans call for three 30-passenger buses, all equipped for the handicapped, running every 30 minutes 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. six days a week. The plan also includes a separate on-demand system for those who require home pickup and aid in boarding vehicles.
Warren said a survey in June found 65 percent said they would use a bus system.
"A surprising 75 percent, some of whom said they would not ride the bus, said they would support the sales tax increase to make the service available," she said.
