First dog Millie, whose lethargy in recent weeks prompted concern at the White House, is suffering from lead poisoning, President Bush disclosed Thursday.
Bush in Aspen, Colo., to speak about the nation's defense, told reporters the 4 1/2-year-old springer spaniel is a casualty of renovation work at the executive mansion.Asked about Millie's lethargy and medical tests, Bush disclosed her illness as "lead poisoning," calling it a "terrible thing."
The president said the ailment was caused by Millie "licking the paint, licking her toes. She's licking her feet, she ingested lead."
There is no word on the recovery period, but Ana Perez, Barbara Bush's press secretary, said all are hopeful that Millie will be in top shape by Sept. 12.
That's the day the presidential pooch's new book, "Millie's Book," comes out.
Coauthored by the first lady, the book will tell all about Millie's life at the White House as America's best-known dog. Proceeds will go to the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy.
