Discipline is observed more closely in the Richardson family of Harrisburg, Pa., than in most others.
Diane Richardson doesn't just give orders to her 19-year-old son, Don. She expects him to salute."He calls me `Captain Mom.' I call him `Private Son,' " said Capt. Diane Richardson, a 15-year member of the Army Reserve.
For years her son said he wanted no part of military life.
"He was emphatic about not joining the Army," said Ms. Richardson, 38. "He just didn't like being ordered around."

But he joined the Army in March. He leaves Aug. 13 for a one-year tour of duty in South Korea as a private. The chance to become a food-service specialist changed his mind.
