Lt. Gary E. Gunrud will be sworn in as the Utah Highway Patrol's assistant superintendent Tuesday, Aug. 7, at 9 a.m., in a special ceremony at the West Valley City Center, 3600 S. 2700 West.

As second in command for the UHP, Gunrud, 39, will be promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel. He will oversee the day-to-day operations of the patrol. He will serve directly under Col. S. Duane Richens.Gunrud will be sworn in by Utah Supreme Court Clerk Geoffrey J. Butler. An official change of rank ceremony will follow during which Gunrud's wife, Renate, will pin on his new badge and attach the rank insignia to his uniform collar.
