The Salt Lake City Council will hold a public hearing on a new housing policy and discuss the council's position on the proposed removal of the sales tax on food at meetings on Tuesday night.
The council has scheduled the public hearing at 6:20 p.m. in the Council Chambers, Room 315, City-County Building, 451 S. State Street. The regular council meeting starts at 6 p.m.
The policy is proposed as an up-to-date, comprehensive plan to address citywide housing issues and to coordinate the efforts of agencies involved in housing programs.
Among the goals of the policy is preserve existing housing stock and multifamily buildings. It would also create possible solutions to problems with rundown rental housing units in the city.
The Salt Lake City Council will discuss its position on a proposed removal of the sales tax on food at a planning meeting, scheduled at 6:45 p.m. after the regular council meeting.
Council members will discuss taking no position, supporting or opposing the removal of the food sales tax. The meeting will be held in Room 325 of the City-County Building.
According to a memo circulated to council members, the city could expect a loss of between $1.8 and $2 million if the sales tax removal passes.
Mayor Palmer DePaulis, a Democrat, has already says he supports the measure, but said he wants the state government to make up the lost revenue. At a press conference last week he said he has not decided whether he would raise taxes if the food tax removal passes.
