Increases in the value of taxable properties in Millard County and prudent financial management of county government will lift a tax burden off the shoulders of residents.

It won't be necessary to increase the general fund to pick up $300,000 for expenses in the county's two hospital districts. Commissioners thought this probably would be required when the hospital districts were merged, with expenses to come out of the general fund. But now it has been determined that the expenses can be absorbed in the general fund without raising taxes.Taxpayers actually will pay less in taxes because they will save the equivalent of five mills in the East Millard Hospital District and two in the West Millard District and won't have to pay the additional taxes equivalent to three-quarters of one mill that was estimated would be needed in the general fund.

County Assessor John Hansen reported that most of the increased value in taxable properties is in state-assessed property, a substantial amount of which comes from the Intermountain Power Plant. The extra money that will be received will be sufficient to partially offset hospital district tax revenue, he said.
