A committee charged with selecting final nominees for state superintendent of public instruction has begun to winnow a field of 37 candidates. Other applications that were mailed to meet the Aug. 1 deadline may trickle in.

Over the next two weeks, the 26 members of the panel will be asked to independently review the applications and rate them on a form created for that purpose, said Ruth H. Funk, a member of the State Board of Education and committee chairwoman.Jay Taggart, former co-chairman with Funk, resigned to become a candidate for the state superintendency. The position was left vacant when James R. Moss resigned in April. Scott W. Bean is interim superintendent.
