John Gowin applies polish to the "Fireball" ride at the Salt Lake County Fair, which kicked off amid fun, food and floats. Hundreds showed up Monday evening at the Murray fairgrounds. The aroma of hay and animal distinguishes the west side of the fairgrounds as the area for 4-H animal displays. Animal-loving children pulled their parents along seeking their favorite bunny, lamb or horse and stopping to pet a guinea pig. Black and Whites 4-H club members Will Barrett, Dan Stephenson and Andy Stephenson confined themselves to the sheep barn where they struggled with Leroy and Lambchop. Nearby, another club member, Billy Wright, carefully snipped the fleece on his black-peppered lamb, Blueberry. Wright said he likes this strangely colored lamb because it's difficult to see the dirt in its wool coat. The fair continues through Saturday, August 11, with nightly firework shows at 10:30.
