A revolt by prisoners demanding an amnesty and a review of their sentences after German unification Oct. 3 spread to 20 prisons and detention centers across East Germany.

More than 200 convicts were participating in hunger strikes, sit-ins and demonstrations on prison roofs.The prisoners say many sentences handed down under the communist government ousted last fall were unnecessarily harsh and that legal authorities should review those cases.
