Deseret Book Co. has opened its new ZCMI Center store on the first floor of the mall, immediately south of its former location.
The company recently signed a lease for a 12,550 square-feet space.The new store will cover the space previously occupied by a gift and greeting card shop, Chandler's Shoes and Juliette's.
Next summer, the ZCMI Center will build a food court and garden area at the previous Deseret Book site and surrounding plaza area. It will extend west toward O.C. Tanner and all the way to Main Street between the Kennecott Building and ZCMI.
Other mall renovations currently under way include the addition of two new fountains and two brass and glass elevators and redesign of the west end of the mall's Main Street facade. The color scheme, lighting, ceiling and flooring will also be changed and 20 more stores will be added.
The large construction wall that has dominated the mall's center court was scheduled for removal Friday afternoon.
