Despite an economic slowdown and increasing financial concerns, 80 percent of U.S. companies have guidelines for granting payments and benefits to separated employees, a survey said Monday.

Of the 1,784 human resource executives surveyed in the summer by Right Associates, a career management and human resource consulting firm, 65 percent said they have formal policies for separation and 15 percent have informal policies.A full two-thirds said their guidelines apply to all employees.

"Overall, these results show that most companies are prepared to assist employees even during a time of slow business activity," said Chairman Frank Louchheim.

"The study suggests that a majority of U.S. corporations act positively to help departing employees.
