Brigham Young University and the Utah Governor's Commission for Women and Families will co-sponsor an International Conference on Gender and the Family at BYU Wednesday through Friday, Feb. 6 through 8.
Participants from throughout the United States and several countries will share their expertise on topics as varied as fathering in the family, historical perspectives, the law, and gender issues related to family violence and elder care."This is a first-of-its-kind conference," said Barbara Vance, chairwoman. "The past two decades have seen extensive research about gender as well as much research related to the family. This conference is blending what is known about the family with what is known about gender."
Sessions, beginning at 9 a.m. each day in the Wilkinson Center, will include general session speakers, panel discussions and paper presentations.
Three woman are scheduled as keynote speakers: Katja Boh, a sociologist from the University of Ljubljana in Yugoslavia; Justice Christine Durham of the Utah State Supreme Court; and Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, historian from the University of New Hampshire.
A registration fee of $75 will include all sessions, refreshment breaks and Wednesday dinner. BYU students may attend conference sessions free, and BYU faculty members are encouraged to register for the entire conference for $25. Registration will be open Feb. 6 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and from 8 to 9 a.m. Feb. 7 and 8 in 369 Wilkinson Center.
