Mosque preachers in Jordan stepped up their attacks on the United States Friday and called the leaders of the U.S.-led coalition against Iraq the "wolves" of the 20th century.

The preachers also attacked the U.S. Congress for approving military action by the Bush adminstration against Iraq to force it out of Kuwait."The infidels of the 20th century's so-called civilized nations are killing the children of Baghdad . . . the civilization of the infidels is led by wolves who are destroying Baghdad without shame," said Ibrahim Qatan, preacher at the state mosque in Amman during Friday prayers.

His sermon was broadcast on Amman Radio and echoed in other mosques around the country, which hosts a predominantly pro-Iraqi Palestinian population.

The preacher said in an emotional speech that it would have been better for the U.S. Congress to thank Israel for its patience in dealing with Palestinian rock throwers rather than to thank it for the restraint it has displayed in not responding to Iraq's Scud missile attacks.

"Where is your patience for the Palestinian child you have killed every morning and evening," he said.
