Battle on the home front Thousands of protesters calling for an end to the war in the Persian Gulf march through Los Angeles Saturday. Across the country, tens of thousands of demonstrators marched and chanted, waging a noisy battle over whether to support the war effort or to demand an end to the fighting. A crowd police estimated at 25,000 filled 14 blocks of San Francisco for a colorful peace march. In Washington, police estimated anti-war crowds on Pennsylvania Avenue at 75,000; organizers said 200,000. In smaller towns, hundreds backed the war effort.
