NEPHI MUST HAVE WATER-SYSTEMS ORDINANCE IN PLACE

Nephi must have an ordinance in place by February to govern the cross-connection of culinary and irrigation water systems.

Roy Tolley, superintendent of the city water department, said the ordinance would require commercial customers to have backflow preventers in place. In June of 1990, water in Nephi developed a bad taste and color, and residents were asked to boil all drinking water and water used in food preparation. Water was tested for contamination, but no health problems were discovered.

The water cleared within a short time.

The problem was suspected to be caused by a cross-connection between city culinary water lines and irrigation lines on private property but the site was never discovered.

The city has two separate water systems.
