Valentine's Day is second only to Christmas as a peak period for greeting card purchases. According to the Greeting Card Association in Washington, D.C., some 1 billion cards will be exchanged on Feb. 14. That's nearly a quarter of all seasonal cards sold.

Men send more cards on Valentine's Day than for any other occasion. Teachers receive the most valentines, followed by children, mothers, wives and sweethearts.
