The Dalai Lama, the exiled spiritual leader of Tibet, right, greets Yale University President Benno Schmidt Jr. in New Haven, Conn. During a speech at the university, the Dalai Lama appealed for permission to return to his occupied homeland "as soon as possible" to dampen growing sentiment for violent action against Chinese rule. The exiled leader also withdrew a 3-year-old peace proposal that called for turning Tibet into a self-governing democracy but would allow China control over foreign policy. The peace plan, made to the European Parliament in 1988 had been rejected by the Chinese.
