HOUSE PANEL WILL PROBE BANK, BAD CHECKS

SHARE HOUSE PANEL WILL PROBE BANK, BAD CHECKS

Six House ethics committee members - none tainted by a rubber check-writing scandal - will form a subcommittee to investigate the chamber's bank and their colleagues who abused the facility.

Committee leaders said Wednesday there were no plans to hire outside legal or banking experts - or to go public anytime soon with names of members who wrote bad checks without penalty. But they defended the committee's past willingness to be harsh on members who broke the rules and vowed there would be no cover-up this time.

"I reject the idea there would be a cover-up," the committee's ranking Republican, Jim Hansen of Utah, said when reporters asked whether the panel could investigate a large percentage of the 435 House members impartially.\
