Forty soldiers and civilians died in fighting that began when mutinous troops attacked a weapons depot near N'Djamena international airport, the government said today.

Loyal troops repelled the rebel soldiers, who attacked on Sunday morning.Monday, armored tanks withdrew from the streets and the city began returning to normal.

Information Minister Mahmat Salem Ahmat said Sunday that three rebel soldiers and one government trooper died in the attack on the depot.
