Olympic sprinter Charles W. Paddock, born here in 1900, was known as the "world's fastest human" in the 1920s.

Paddock was a member of the 1920, 1924 and 1928 U.S. Olympic teams, winning the 100 meters in 1920.During World War II, he was a Marine Corps captain and was killed in a plane crash in Alaska.
